GSO participates in organizing the Second Gulf Metrology Forum
 

The GCC Standardization Organization (GSO) participates in organizing the activities of the Second Gulf Metrology Forum, which is organized by the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology in the United Arab Emirates UAE (MOIAT) in partnership with the Gulf Association for Metrology (GULFMET) and the Abu Dhabi Quality and Conformity Council represented by the Emirates Institute of Metrology, on 22-23 April 2024, under the theme “Metrology for sustainability”.

The forum aims at raising awareness of the importance of precision and reliable measurements in supporting quality infrastructure in the industrial and technological sector and stimulate innovation to produce products of more competitive advantage, discuss the latest developments and trends in the field of metrology, raise awareness of the importance of precision measurements in the industrial, healthcare, energy and environment sectors, and enhance cooperation between Metrology specialists and supporting innovation to pave the way for developing new measurement techniques.

The forum is held under the theme “Metrology for Sustainability,” in compliance with the theme of World Metrology Day, which falls on 20 May of each year, and is held with broad international participation from officials, experts, and specialists from international and regional organizations.

The forum’s agenda encompasses various important topics, such as the role of metrology in shaping a sustainable future, and the strategic direction of the UAE and Gulf in the field of metrology to support industry and environmental and manufacturing sustainability by developing implementable strategies to confront environmental challenges, in addition to enhancing cooperation between specialists in metrology and the relevant organizations and bodies with a view to promoting knowledge exchange, joint initiatives and display innovative measurement techniques, equipment and solutions through exhibitions and displays, as the forum provides a platform for communication, enhancing partnerships and exploring opportunities for joint work in the field of metrology.

The forum is supported by international and regional organizations concerned with metrology, which are represented in the forum through the participation of the directors of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM) and the International Organization for Legal Metrology (OIML), the director of the International Metrology Confederation (IMEKO), the president of GSO, and the president of the European Federation of National Associations of Measurement, Testing and Analytical Laboratories (EUROLAB), and the directors of national standardization bodies in the Cooperation Council for the Arab States of the Gulf (GCC), in addition to the United Nations Industrial Development Organization (UNIDO).

On the sidelines of the forum, three workshops will be held aiming at providing participants with skills and knowledge in the fields of measurement in the field of “calibration of non-automatic weighing instruments” supported by GSO, and a workshop in the field of chemical and biological metrology, supported by BIPM, and a workshop on “Verification of Pre-Packaged Products” supported by OIML.

It should be noted that the GULFMET is a regional metrological organization operating under the umbrella of GSO. It was established in 2010 and obtained international recognition in October 2015 by the decision of the International Committee for Weights and Measures (BIPM CIPM), then it obtained full recognition of voting and election rights in June 2021. Its membership includes the GCC States, and the Republic of Yemen. It also includes Egypt, Turkey, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Hong Kong, and South Korea as participating members.

The GULFMET aims at supporting national metrology institutes in member states and obtain international recognition for their capabilities in measurement and calibration (CMCs), capacity building, and strengthening partnerships with regional and international metrological organizations.
