GSO Congratulates the International Telecommunication Union on its 160th Anniversary
The Gulf Cooperation Council Standardization Organization (GSO) extended its heartfelt congratulations to the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) on the occasion of its 160th anniversary.
In its message, GSO praised the pivotal role that the ITU has played since its establishment in 1865 in advancing global telecommunications and fostering international collaboration to build a more connected world. The organization highlighted the ITU’s enduring contribution to setting standards and facilitating cooperation across borders in the rapidly evolving communications sector.
GSO also reaffirmed its pride in having secured full membership in the ITU Standardization Sector as of December 22, 2020, a milestone achievement that strengthens the organization’s international standing. This membership grants GSO and its member states a range of strategic privileges, including access to the comprehensive suite of ITU standardization meetings, active participation in the development of international standards from inception to approval, and a voice in critical global telecommunications forums.
Through this membership, GSO takes part in major ITU bodies such as the World Telecommunication Standardization Assembly, the ITU Plenipotentiary Conference, the Telecommunication Standardization Advisory Group, and working groups focused on intellectual property and other technical domains.
This significant step followed years of dedicated effort, culminating in the signing of a cooperation agreement between GSO and ITU on September 18, 2019, in Cape Town, South Africa. The agreement was inked on the sidelines of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) General Assembly meetings and marked the beginning of closer collaboration in areas of mutual interest.
As the ITU celebrates 160 years of service to the global community, GSO reaffirmed its commitment to supporting international standardization efforts and contributing to the advancement of telecommunications in the Gulf region.
