GSO Receives SASMO Delegation
The GCC Standardization Organization (GSO) received a delegation from The Syrian Arab Organization for Standardization and Metrology (SASMO) at its headquarters in Riyadh on Monday, 4 May 2026. The delegation was headed by H.E. Dr. Eng. Yaser Alaiwi, Director General of the Organization, and included Eng. Tharaa Qubaili, Director of International Cooperation. The visit came within the framework of strengthening cooperation and exchanging expertise in the fields of standardization, standards, conformity assessment, and quality infrastructure.
During the meeting, GSO delivered an introductory presentation outlining its role in harmonizing standardization activities and related functions, as well as the services it provides in the fields of standards, metrology, technical regulations, conformity assessment, training, and supporting electronic systems.
Discussions between the two sides included an overview of the procedures followed in the development and issuance of Gulf standards and technical regulations, along with the related electronic platforms. The meeting also highlighted GSO initiatives aimed at engaging relevant stakeholders in the development of the Gulf standardization system, in addition to reviewing several technical systems used by GSO, most notably the “Mutabiq” system dedicated to conformity certificates for vehicles, tires, and motorcycles.
The two sides also discussed opportunities to benefit from programs and training courses offered by the GCC Training Center, in addition to addressing the harmonization of customs classification (HS Code) in light of the ongoing coordination with the GCC Customs Union Authority.
The meeting emphasized the importance of continuing the exchange of expertise and strengthening technical cooperation channels between both parties in a manner that supports standardization systems, develops quality infrastructure, protects consumers, and facilitates trade exchange between GSO Member States and the Syrian Arab Republic, while contributing to the advancement of joint Arab standardization efforts.
