GSO Celebrates World Metrology Day 2025

The GCC Standardization Organization (GSO) and other similar bodies and institutions around the world are celebrating World Metrology Day, which falls on 20 May every year. The chosen theme for this year is “Measurements for all times, for all people”.

The GCC Standardization Organization (GSO), alongside national, regional, and international metrology bodies, marked World Metrology Day on May 20, 2025. This annual event honors the critical role of measurement science in society, with this year’s theme, “Measurements for All Times, for All People”, emphasizing the importance of accessible, reliable, and inclusive measurements that support equality and sustainable development worldwide.

In his speech on this occasion, H.E. Eng. Nawaf bin Ibrahim Al Mana, President of GSO, pointed out that the world gathers this year on 20 May to celebrate World Metrology Day, in recognition to the role that measurement science plays in shaping our history, enriching our present and leading our future, adding that the theme “Measurements for All Times, for All People” promotes inclusiveness and the importance of ensuring that reliable and traceable measurements are available to everyone, which contributes to promoting equality and sustainable development around the world.

He pointed out that this year’s World Metrology Day has acquired additional importance as it coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Meter Convention, which means an elapse of a century and a half of international collaboration in the field of metrology, and this year represents a turning point; from ensuring fair trade and advancing scientific discoveries to confront global challenges such as climate change and public health.

His Excellency pointed out the role of GULFMET, the regional metrology organization under GSO, in advancing measurement science within the Gulf region. Through the efforts of national metrology laboratories in GSO member states, significant strides have been made in developing new measurement techniques, participating in international intercomparison programs, and securing global recognition for measurement and calibration capabilities, all to ensure the reliability and integrity of measurement results regionally and internationally.

In his speech, His Excellency the GSO President congratulated and thanked all those working in the national standardization bodies in the Member States in general, and those in the metrology activity in particular, with sincere congratulations and best wishes, “I wish all those working in the metrology activity to achieve the goals and aspirations of their States to reach advanced levels in the field of metrology and highlight the importance of this activity and achieve its effective role in all areas of life. It is noteworthy that World Metrology Day commemorates the signing of the International Meter Convention on May 20, 1875 by representatives of seventeen nations. The convention established a framework for global collaboration in measurement science and its applications across industry, commerce, and society. The Kingdom of Saudi Arabia became a signatory in 2011, followed by the United Arab Emirates in 2015, with all GSO member states actively participating in the activities of the International Bureau of Weights and Measures (BIPM).
